The Department of Physics, B. N. College was established in the year 1956 with an aim to impart higher education in science stream in general and Physics in particular to the students of its catchment area i.e., western part of Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal. The Department of Physics has been trying to uplift the students and its stakeholders to the national and international level. A number of veteran Physicists like Dr. A. N. Talukdar, Dr. Lakhinandan Bora, Dr. A. K. Borbora, Dr. B. K. Sarma, Dr. A. E. Md. K. Zaman etc. extended their valuable service in the Department to make it one of the successful Departments of the College. Under the guidance of these personalities a number of students of national and international repute were produced by the department. At present the department has been running with seven faculty members headed by Dr. Nandita Prodhani, each having good academic career. During its inception, the department used chalk and talk method for classroom teaching. As time passed on the department used to introduce computer aided technology in its classroom teaching. The department has also introduced other innovative methods like seminar work, group discussion, quizzing, model competition. The department has noticed a remarkable improvement among the students over the last few decades. All faculty members remain actively busy with different innovative practices in the department. With the help of college authority, the faculty members of the department use to attend various programs like FDP, workshop, conference, seminar etc. to make themselves well equipped with recent trend of sciences.
The vision of the Department is to guide the students in accordance with the syllabus imposed by Gauhati University in such a way that it bridges the gap between the higher secondary (10+2) and post graduate levels of Physics by providing a more complete and concrete framework in almost all areas of basic Physics.
After completion of degree course, the students can cover almost all basic areas of Physics including statistical mechanics, quantum physics, solid state physics, computational physics, electronics etc.
The student can also learn a least knowledge on research environment both in experimental and theoretical field by their compulsory project work. It is also noted that basic of research methodology, plagiarism in intellectual property are also learnt in these phases.
