A lecture on “Scope and Opportunities in Botany”was conducted by Department of Botany, B.N. College (Autonomous), Dhubri on 6th August as per the guidelines of UGC for B.Sc. 1st semester Major. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Bipankar Hajong, Assistant Professor of the Department of Botany. The lecture was aimed to provide Botany first-semester students with an in-depth understanding of the various fieldssuch as Algae, Fungi, Plant Morphology and Anatomy, Plant Taxonomy and Systematics, Plant Physiology, Plant Ecology, Plant Genetics, Economic Botany and Ethnobotany, Paleobotany, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Agronomy, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Phytochemistry, Plant Biotechnology, Forestry etc. within botany and the potential career paths available to them. It highlighted the relevance of botany in today's world and underscored the diverse opportunities that a degree in botany can offer. Career Opportunities in Botany The lecture then transitioned to discuss the various career paths available to botany graduates. It emphasized that a background in botany can lead to diverse roles across both government and private sectors. For instance, within the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, graduates may find opportunities in research institutes and biotechnology departments. In the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, students can work with the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and the Forest Research Institute (FRI). Similarly, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, graduates can pursue careers in agricultural research, including opportunities with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Overall, the lecture provided a comprehensive overview of the many fields within botany and the varied career opportunities available to graduates. It emphasized the importance of botany in understanding and preserving the natural world, as well as its crucial role in addressing global challenges such as food security, environmental sustainability, and health.
